As we have looked at feminism over the last few weeks we have often become focused on its past and history. The movement has achieved a great deal for women’s equality. However, feminism has far from run out of importance, if anything it helps shine a light on issues that women still face daily. So, for this week we will be looking at the feminist movement of today, the issues it seeks to address, and how feminism can still be for the greater good of achieving equality and empowering women internationally.
Modern feminism seeks to address domestic and work-related issues that females face daily, from work-related harassment to a lack of representation of high-ranking female business leaders. A pivotal point in modern feminism (often called 4th wave feminism) is the creation of the #MeToo movement. It is a campaign that challenges blatant sexual harassment of females in the workplace. This campaign even allowed major changes to be made in places such as Hollywood, in which a plethora of allegations against top male executives led to widespread support of the #MeToo movement, as it became apparent that #MeToo could enact real change in the workplace. This movement was then endorsed by multiple female celebrities ranging from Gwyneth Paltrow to Jennifer Lawrence. The international support that the movement has managed to gain has allowed issues surrounding workplace harassment to be discussed in the public discourse and therefore helps encourage people to call out these awful types of behavior when they are seen.
The #MeToo movement is a clear example of modern feminism and how these campaigns can still make a big difference in achieving equality for women and ensuring that they are not harassed or discriminated against. It is also a way to show how influential and important it can be for female and male role models to take a vocal stance as it inspires confidence in others who then also begin to make a change.
